Dogs in the village cemetery

Dogs are not allowed in the village cemetery unless they are registered guide dogs. All dogs must be on a lead at all times.

Published: 22 October 2025

It has been noted that there has been an increase in people walking their dogs in the Durham Lane Cemetery, and in some cases, people have let their dogs run free to defecate where they like and not even pick up after their dogs, and dogs have been seen to urinate on headstones.  This is not acceptable at any time.

The cemetery rules clearly state that DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED unless they are registered guide dogs, and in any case dogs must always be on a lead.

Durham County Council have issued a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) which means we can fine irresponsible dog owners.
